The Kawaihae Reef has spurs, reef features that reach like fingers out over the sand, forming small, narrow canyons. This highlighted area has Porites rus or plate and pillar coral that colonized it. P. rus colonies here mainly formed plates on the walls of the canyons. Surprisingly, pillars are absent.
