This mound coral head has started to recover from the 2015 Global Coral bleaching event. As observed, the coral colonies grow rapidly when conditions are favorable. These coral heads are outside of the Kawaihae Harbor.
This giant mound coral, Porites lutea, about 10 ft in diameter, is in recovery mode. It is located northwest of Maumae Beach, south of Kawaihae Reef. The fish are 5″-6″ long for scale comparison.
