Lindsey Kramer of the Division of Aquatic Resources, DAR, and assistant Julia Rose of Nature Conservancy spent over two hours on May 10, 2017, replanting coral on the inner harbor of Kawaihae Reef. We were out on a calm day with fair visibility. This area is recovering nicely. Hulakai Grounded on Reef Second Time
Sailboat Hulukai was aground on the reef for a second time this morning. Its chained anchor line was seen trailing into the reef. The boat may have dragged its anchor to end up just north of the area where it was stranded on Sunday, January 22, 2017. kawaihae will lose its beach again

History is about to repeat itself when the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation Harbors Division implements its 2035 Commercial Harbor Master Plan for Kawaihae Harbor shortly.
Kawaihae had a mile-long beach stretching from the north small boat harbor to the Heiau of Pu’ukoholā Heiau National Historic Site before dredging the reef and constructing the Kawaihae Harbor.… Read more “kawaihae will lose its beach again”
