Today, a survey of coral bleaching covered the inside of Kawaihae Harbor and outside the break wall. The water temperature is an average of 85F, and a temperature of 85F was recorded outside the break wall. Cauliflower corals, Pocillopora meandrina, appear to be 98%—100% affected. Corals at shallow depths inside the harbor are at various stages of stress, but less than 40% are bleached at this time.
