mimicry of finger coral to cauliflower coral

In the calm water of Kawaihae harbor, coral growth is different than in areas with more wave actions. At first glance, these coral colonies appear to be another species. They are similar to a cauliflower coral (Pocillopora meandrina)’s branching. But, these are finger corals (Porites compressa). Their branches can fuse.

  1. Always looking for new cauliflower coral. Sometimes getting fooled. Thanks for pointing out differences. Friend and I spotted a Moray eel in the pocket (what shall we call this area?) around the giant coral head on Monday. 😉

    1. Rob,
I think you should name it, I call it the grand coral, but that is a lame name. You will find more cauliflower coral over the beachside. More people need to know that they are there anyway. Thank you.
